The Undocumented Population: Illegal
Immigrants in the United States
A recent analysis conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center profiles the
illegal immigrant population in the United States by country of origin,
age, and other factors, as well as their residence within the United
States, and plenty of other data:
Legal Status of All Immigrants in the United States:

About six of every ten immigrants came into the US as legal permanent
residents. The undocumented migrant population represents just under 30%
of the immigrant population of the United States.
Country of Origin:

Just under 60% of the undocumented population (not the entire immigrant
population) is from Mexico. Almost one out of every five is from outside
of Latin America.
Time of Arrival in the United States:

65% of all undocumented immigrants came to the United States within the
past decade.
Percentage Illegally Immigrating from Mexico:

For every period listed, the percentage of illegal immigrants from
Mexico as a percentage of all immigrants has increased. Starting with
just 18% in the first half of the 1980's to 85% between 2000 and 2004.
Location Within the United States:

One out of every four undocumented immigrants resides in California.
Texas, Florida, and New York follow California, respectively, in the
number of undocumented immigrants.
Undocumented Immigrant Redistribution:

While in 1990 just under half of all undocumented immigrants resided in
California, that portion has dropped to under on in every four by 2004.
Of the top six states in which undocumented immigrants live, only Texas
has seen an increase in the percentage that live there.
