Politics of Television

Compiled by David Pakman

In my second internet survey done with 100% original data, I surveyed 1020 registered voters (no unregistered in this one) and asked them about their television preferences. Here are the results.

The first question asked respondents to select the show they would rather watch given the choices of CSI, Fear Factor, Friends, Seinfeld, and Survivor. Here are the result by political affiliation:

The three trends that I noticed right away are that Democrats and Independents are much more likely to select Seinfeld as the show they would rather watch (and Friends, to a lesser degree) while Republicans are much more in favor of CSI, Fear Factor and Survivor.

Here are the TV show preferences according to where people live:

Looking at the results by where people live, those in cities and suburbs tend to prefer Seinfeld and CSI. Those in rural areas were not nearly as favorable to Seinfeld, but much more favorable to Fear Factor and Survivor, and to a lesser degree, Friends.

Thirdly, here are TV show preferences according to education:

Again, Seinfeld seems to be the show with the biggest change based on the demographic we look at. Those with college degrees (or currently in college) are significantly more likely to select Seinfeld as the show they would rather watch, compared to those who have no college degree (and are not currently in college).

Lastly, I asked about which late night television host/program respondents prefer, given the choices of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with Dave Letterman, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. As a side not, the Late Late Show was not including due to the lack of a steady host for the program around the time the survey was taken.

Here are the results according to political party:

Republicans do not enjoy Late Night with Conan O'Brien nearly as much as Democrats and Independents do, although they do enjoy David Letterman quite a bit more. There seems to be no significant trend as to Jay Leno's audience.

Lastly, let's look at which TV show the fans of each late night show prefer:

What stands out here is that those who prefer Conan O'Brien also prefer Seinfeld but quite a significant margin. On the other hand, Fear Factor and Survivor seem more popular with the Jay Leno crowd.
