The World on the World: Who Should Have
More Influence?
From the view of various world countries, who should have more influence
in the world, and which countries' actions are perceived as negative in
the world? A PIPA
study in conjunction with
GlobeScan have
provided precisely those answers.
The first question posed to the 23,518 individuals across 23
countries surveyed was whether Europe becoming more influential than the
United States in world affairs would be mainly positive or mainly
negative:
Overall, across all countries surveyed, 58% believe it would be mainly
positive for Europe to become more influential than the US in world
affairs, while 23% felt it would be mainly negative. Without including
the European countries, the results are 53% for mainly positive and 25%
for mainly negative.
The countries who by the largest majority believe it would be mainly
positive are Spain, followed by Germany and Italy. The
non-European countries highest on the list are Mexico, China, and
South Africa.
Of the countries that believe increased European influence in exchange
for US influence would me mainly negative, the US was the country
leading the way, followed by the Phillippines and India. The European
country which most felt additional European influence would be mainly
negative is Poland, although there is still a majority (58%) there who
feel European influence would be mainly positive.
The next question asks respondents specifically about whether certain
countries or areas have mainly positive or negative influence in the
world. The answers are shown in terms of the number of countries, out of
23, which believe that particular country has positive or negative
influence:
Europe is at the top of the list with 22 countries indicating it is a
mainly positive influence, followed closely behind by France. Russia
and the US had respondents from 14 and 15 countries, respectively,
indicating their influence in the world is mainly negative.
Lastly, here are the results for both French and US influence in the
world, broken down by country:
Without including the country being
asked about, France has a mainly positive rating of 58% according to
the other countries in the survey, and the US a mainly positive
rating of 38%.
Germany, Italy, and China are the
countries most positive regarding France, while Turkey,
Japan, and Mexico are the countries least positive regarding
France. The United States, Great Britain, and Turkey are the
countries most negative about France. The US is the only
country with more than 50% mainly negative regarding France.
The Philippines, South Africa, and
India are the countries most positive regarding the United
States, while Mexico, Russia, and Turkey are the countries least
positive about the United States. Argentina, Germany, and Russia
